Gender Based Violence

JLH has been tackling Gender-Based Violence (GBV) since May 2024, empowering communities through churches and cultural leaders. With over 868 beneficiaries yearly, the program raises awareness, supports survivors, and challenges harmful norms to create safer communities!

Understanding Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Gender Based Violence is an umbrella term which refers to any harm or pain inflicted on an individual because of their gender and it results into; Physical, emotional, sexual and economic violence. GBV is some times called violence against women and girls because they are the ones who are most affected. In uganda, Men and boy are custodians of culture and the norms which explains why women are mostly affected by GBV than men and boys. The cultural norms and practices marginalize women while giving men and boys most privileges.

The goal of GBV program is to have reduced cases of GBV among women and girls of participating communities

We target women and girls in families, schools.

GBV Prevention Through Community Leadership

GBV operates through the chuch and cultural leadership structures as entry points to the community for dialogue and awareness to prevent GBV. The church is a powerful entity that people trust when faced with problems so equiping the church leaders with knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to GBV means many people will trust the message and denounce GBV. On the other hand, the cultural leaders are custodians of the culture and make most decisions which in most cases are in favour of men but not women. Targeting them means that the negative norms and practices will be stopped and women and girls will be protected.
