Stories of Transformation in Child protection We Will Help You Every Step Of The Way

Valerie Kasamani kisaber Marion
Child protection officer JLH-Uganda

I believe a world without violence against children is possible. So, it is with this in mind that one such case of child aggravated sexual abuse was brought to our attention.

Seven-year-old Laker (not real name) was defiled by two men who claimed to be pastors of a local church in a village somewhere in Gulu district. Laker’s (real name withheld) father said that his daughter was not well, and so he decided to take her to the pastors to pray for healing for his little girl, but instead they took advantage of her vulnerability and sexually abused her. The abuse was so severe that she was rushed to a referral hospital in Gulu City, where the doctors did everything they could to save her life. She had an operation but was in a lot of pain afterwards due to the severity of the wounds sustained. We were called to take up the case of the child, and we offered to buy medication needed to ease her pain. The medication worked, and she was transferred to Lacor Hospital for more expert opinion and help. We helped with the transfer, and we ensured that she saw the doctor in a timely manner as her case was very delicate.

We paid many visits while she was there and also took some coloring pages, colors, some juice, and a few other things to show her that she had a lot of support surrounding her.

When she recovered a bit, we were allowed to take a stroll outside of the hospital room with her and also to engage her more on what the future looked like. We had told the father that it was not wise to take her back to where the abuse occurred, and we suggested that she move in with her maternal grandmother, who stays very far away from where the abuse happened. Her grandmother was more than happy to take her in, and she was even the primary caregiver at the hospital. The father was also in agreement that his little girl should be taken far away from where the abuse occurred.

Laker was finally discharged from the hospital after 3 months!! There was much rejoicing from the hospital staff and even her mother, who is estranged from the father, came to see her daughter off. The little girl looked and felt much better and was given lots of antibiotics to take for one month afterwards.

WET CONSULTING LIMITED

The spring well that the ongoing children were sharing with animals before WET drilled for them a borehole.

There is this one community that benefited from our projects Pabala Ribe-Ber where school going pupils had to leave school earlier so that they catch up with time to fetch water to fetch water from the nearby spring before its actually contaminated by the animals that drink from the same source.

But as a result of the borehole drilled by WET, children don’t have to worry anymore about going back early to fetch water, hence leaving school before time.

The good part about this is that they are now concentrating in school, which has improved their performance and are now scoring higher grades in school.

The borehole drilled by WET so that the school children get access to clean water and not sharing the spring well with animals
