From GBV response to wider gender transformation
Gender mainstreaming is a core component of the work of Justice Livelihoods Health across programme interventions. It builds on JLH’s GBV prevention work while broadening the focus toward dignity, protection, accountability, safeguarding, and positive social transformation.
In Kasese District, JLH is implementing community-based initiatives focused on addressing Gender-Based Violence and strengthening Community Change and Mindset Transformation Processes.
The approach empowers local communities to identify GBV cases, create safe spaces for survivors, and strengthen referral systems through established community-level referral pathways.

The 2024 Kasese programming engaged communities through planning meetings, faith and cultural leader trainings, school-based activities, SRHR sessions, and referral support.

Community dialogues and mindset transformation
Community dialogues create safe opportunities for church leaders, cultural leaders, families, and community members to discuss GBV prevention, healthy relationships, and community wellbeing.
School engagement and GBV awareness
School-based GBV clubs and debates engage students and teachers in awareness, prevention, and positive behaviour change among young people.
SRHR training for girls and women
Women and girls are supported with information and training on access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights services.
Referral pathways and case management
GBV-related cases are supported through psychological and legal aid referral mechanisms, strengthening survivor response and protection at community level.
Faith and cultural leaders are opening doors for change
Church and cultural leaders are being equipped with practical knowledge and tools to address harmful cultural practices, strengthen family relationships, and promote dignity, protection, and accountability.
The engagement of church leaders has significantly strengthened community entry and participation. Because faith leaders are respected and influential, resistance linked to cultural beliefs and social norms has reduced considerably.
Their involvement has increased trust, acceptance, and openness around sensitive conversations related to GBV, family relationships, and community wellbeing.
Churches continue the work beyond trainings
Ongoing engagements help promote positive behaviour change, strengthen community support systems, and create safer environments for vulnerable individuals and survivors.
Community Bible Studies and Dialogues
Churches continue to roll out Bible studies and dialogue sessions focusing on GBV prevention, healthy relationships, resource mobilisation, and God’s purpose for families and communities.
Community Ownership and Sustainability
Involving local leaders from the beginning has strengthened community ownership, participation, and sustainability of interventions across selected communities.
